Introduction
There is something truly special about Dunston Hall Estate. Nestled on the edge of Chesterfield, this stunning Grade II listed manor combines timeless Derbyshire character with a bright, contemporary interior that makes it one of my favourite venues to photograph.
When Tara and Karl booked me as their Dunston Hall photographer, I already knew we were in for a beautiful day. Their vision was elegant and personal — a classic navy and ivory palette, stunning florals, and a day that felt genuinely relaxed in amongst all the grandeur.
Morning Preparations at the Hall
The morning started in the beautifully appointed bridal suite at Dunston Hall. Tara's gown was a real showstopper — a strapless ballgown with intricate floral lace appliqué, a sheer corseted back, and a cathedral train that trailed magnificently across the floor. Everything about her look felt considered and timeless.
The ornate gold floor mirror in the suite became the centrepiece of the getting-ready shots — it's one of those features that just works perfectly for wedding photography. Watching the bridesmaids gather around Tara in their sleek navy gowns, with the flower girl beaming in the reflection, was a lovely start to the morning.
The staircase shot is one I always look forward to at Dunston Hall, and Tara absolutely owned it. Shot from above with natural light pouring through the tall window, her cathedral train cascading down the steps behind her — it's one of my favourite frames from the whole day.
The Ceremony: Flowers, Vows and a First Kiss
The ceremony room was absolutely breathtaking. White blossom and trailing ivy hung from the ceiling in generous swags, filling the space with a garden-like atmosphere that had guests looking up in wonder as they took their seats. It's one of the most striking ceremony setups I've seen at Dunston Hall.
As a photographer, those quiet in-between moments are what I'm always watching for — the way Karl looked when Tara appeared at the end of the aisle, the stillness just before the vows, the exhale of the room when they kissed for the first time as husband and wife. This ceremony had all of them.
The confetti walk was wonderful — a complete blizzard of white paper squares, the pair of them laughing through it with their hands held tight. As a photograph, it tells you everything you need to know about the two of them.
Portrait Time on the Estate Grounds
We stepped away from the drinks reception for portraits on the estate lawns, and the setting didn't disappoint. The stone manor, the formal hedgerows, the classic red Porsche 944 parked to one side — it was all there. And then the Derbyshire wind decided to join us.
Tara's cathedral veil caught the breeze perfectly, and rather than fight it we leaned right into it. The results speak for themselves. There's something about a veil mid-flight that turns a photograph into something cinematic, and Tara and Karl were completely natural throughout — laughing, relaxed, and genuinely easy together.
Toasts, Tears and the Wedding Breakfast
The reception room was stunning. Long tables dressed with navy runners, blue charger plates and candlelight, with a low garden-style floral arrangement running the length of the top table in blush, peach, white and soft blue. Behind Tara and Karl, a full circular arch of white roses and greenery rose floor to ceiling. It was genuinely one of the most beautiful room setups I've photographed at this venue.
The speeches were full of warmth and laughter. Karl's toast — champagne glass raised, notes in hand — drew a look from Tara that said everything. The father of the bride delivered a speech that moved the room in equal measure. These are the moments I'm always ready for.
